Course Description:

Storytelling Through a Lens is a hands-on course designed to equip learners with the creative and technical skills of smartphone photography and video editing for impactful visual storytelling. Through six immersive stages—from planning and capturing moods to mobile editing and final project presentation—participants will learn to craft compelling stories using images and short videos.

The course also introduces the 7 Core Camera Skills essential to high-quality video production: camera settings, stabilization, manual controls, framing, shot sizes, camera angles, and movement.

By the end, learners will be able to plan, shoot, edit, and share visually engaging content that resonates with audiences across platforms.

Course Learning Outcome:

In the Storytelling Through a Lens course, learners will explore the elements of typography, logos, visual communication design, and information design. They will gain an understanding of key visual communication design concepts and techniques, along with the fundamentals and forms of colour. Additionally, learners will conduct research on relevant visual formats to effectively present their ideas and creative processes.

Learning Units:

Unit 1: Capturing Mood Through the Lens

A shot plan provides the overall creative direction for a photoshoot, outlining the intended aesthetic and visual style of the images.
From the shot plan, you can develop a detailed shot list, which breaks down the technical steps required to achieve the desired visual effects.

Unit 2: Build a Story with Your Lens

Utilizing Smartphone Cameras for Visual Formats

Unit 3: Refine Your Shot with Settings and Stability

Experiment with different subjects and lighting conditions.
Practice stabilization techniques.
Adjust manual controls such as ISO, white balance, and shutter speed.
Understand how these settings impact image quality.

Unit 4: Guide the Viewer’s Eye Through Dynamic Shots

To apply composition principles, varied shot sizes, camera angles, and basic movement techniques
To plan and record a short sequence or photo set that visually tells a story.

Unit 5: Bring Your Story to Life Through Mobile Editing

Explore mobile video editing techniques using CapCut.
Trim clips, apply transitions, add text/effects, and enhance visual quality with simple edits.

Unit 6: Finalise Your Edit and Share Your Story

Apply a complete video editing workflow using a smartphone editing app.
Organize, assemble, enhance, and finalize a short video project.
Rough cuts, transitions, color correction, sound design, and export formatting
